Smoke Free Virginia Now

Tell Your Legislators That You Want a Smoke Free Virginia, NOW!

Everyone has the right to breathe clean, smoke-free air, free from the proven dangers of secondhand smoke. No one should have to risk their health to earn a paycheck or enjoy an evening out.

Your Legislators Need to Hear From You!

In June 2006, the U.S. Surgeon General released The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Secondhand Smoke.  In it, the Surgeon General asserts that, "Nonsmokers need protection through the restriction of smoking public places and workplaces." The 2006 report confirmed that secondhand smoke is a cause of heart disease and lung cancer, and has immediate adverse effects on the cardiovascular system. Further, the report concludes that "There is NO risk-free level of secondhand smoke."

A January 2008 poll showed that 75% of Virginians support a statewide law that would prohibit smoking in public places, including public buildings, offices, restaurants, and bars.  Why continue to debate the issue?  The debate is over!  E-mail your legislator and tell them you want a smoke-free Virginia now.

Your letter:
Dear Legislator Title Last Name, As your constituent, I want you to know that I support prohibiting smoking in indoor public places and I urge you to support comprehensive smoke free legislation. Exposure to secondhand smoke is a health hazard that causes or exacerbates a wide range of adverse health effects, including heart attacks, cancer, and asthma. I believe all workers should be protected from secondhand smoke in the workplace.

In January 2008 a statewide poll showed that 75% of Virginians supported a statewide law that would prohibit smoking in public places and 85% of Virginians feel that all workers should be protected from secondhand smoke in the workplace. The poll clearly shows that the majority of Virginians support prohibiting smoking in public places.

Prohibiting smoking in the workplace can have an immediate and dramatic impact on the health of workers and patrons. How can we allow workers who must make a living and children in public places to breathe in air that is full of carcinogens?

We can't wait any longer; we need a smoke free Virginia, now. I urge you to support comprehensive legislation which will make indoor public places in Virginia smoke free.

Sincerely,
